Beaver Island Community Development Corporation

The Beaver Island Community Development Corporation is an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the quality of life for seniors and disabled adults residing on Beaver Island by providing and maintaining adequate, high-quality, cost-effective housing.

BIDC Supportive Housing Project Overview

Beaver Island is home for many seniors as well as the location of their immediate families, friends and natural support systems. At this time, seniors who are unable to maintain their homes or who are isolated on the island must leave the island to seek necessary housing and medical care on the mainland.

The Beaver Island Supportive Housing Project is designed to meet the long-term housing needs of seniors and disabled adults living on Beaver Island. Phase I of the project proposal includes the development of six apartments with an adjoining residential common area. The apartments will be constructed on the property adjacent to the Rural Health Center in the Township of St. James.

As an organization, Beaver Island Community Development Corporation is characterizing the residential units of the housing project as "Supported Independent Living." By definition, Supported Independent Living implies that services available in the surrounding community will provide the necessary support to seniors in an independent residential setting until they clearly require more acute medical and residential care.

The Beaver Island Supportive Housing Project is a program designed to promote longevity, independence, and quality of life. This program offers an opportunity to demonstrate the feasibility of the development of supportive housing in rural Northern Michigan and to serve a community that has a unique place in the history of the State.
